Hello, my name is Robyn (she/her) and I am a Registered Psychotherapist in Barrie, ON. I completed my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University and received my Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, majoring in Cognitive Science with a minor Psychology and Buddhist Psychology.
Beginning Therapy
When starting with me in the therapy room, I try to foster a down-to-earth, warm, and personable atmosphere so that we can be our authentic selves. Starting with a new therapist can be intimidating, so my goal is to help you feel comfortable and confident that I am there for you and able to help. I do this through maintaining a positive, non-judgemental, and compassionate view of you as my client, and it is only with such a foundation that we can explore the reasons you came to therapy and the goals you would like to work towards. This phase typically lasts 2-3 sessions and I strongly recommend pre-booking weekly sessions for a consistent start.
Change/working phase
Once we are under way, I use an assortment of tools and modalities that may suit your needs best, though those I most often use are:
Emotion-focused Therapy; Relational, Attachment, and Family Systems approaches; Internal Family Systems; Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT); Behavioural analysis/psychoeducation for habit formation and ADHD management; and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Behavioural/Self-compassion Therapies.
Length of this stage can really vary depending on needs, circumstances, and more. Most commonly, I encourage pre-booking a couple of bi-weekly sessions at this point.
Maintenance or Goal Shifting Phase
Once changes have begun, you might feel you would like to extend time between sessions (e.g., monthly) or come in flexibly for check-ins and reflections. Alternatively, you might find that changes result in new goals to come into view. In such a case, we can reassess the treatment plan and scheduling and return to a new working phase. This can occur as many times as you feel you need, and doing so can often lead to deeper exploration and more holistic, lasting change.
Areas of Focus: Relational therapy for individuals and couples (intimacy, rupture and repair, communication, anxious/avoidant attachment) - ADHD - Emotion Regulation - Family Dynamics and Identity - Borderline Personality Disorder - Teen concerns - Self-esteem - Anxiety - Depression - Self exploration
Scheduling Note: if you are a new client, I strongly encourage you to to pre-book the first 3-4 sessions weekly or bi-weekly in so that there is consistency as we begin the therapeutic process as my schedule can fill suddenly. If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment that is no problem, just keep in mind our 48 hour cancellation policy. Thank you!
