Questions About Trauma Therapy
Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?
Not necessarily. First off, we’ll always meet you where you’re at and work at a pace that feels comfortable, and not too much, too soon. The early work of trauma therapy focuses on safety and stabilization. That means building tools to help you manage symptoms, regulate your emotions, and feel more grounded in your body. We also take time to build a sense of safety and trust in the therapeutic relationship before moving into deeper work.
Once that foundation is there, we may begin to gently explore your experiences, but only in a way that feels safe and supportive. You’re always in control of what you share and when. A lot of approaches let you work through the impact of trauma without needing to go into full detail right away.
Will trauma therapy make me feel worse? I'm afraid to relive the past.
That’s a really valid concern, and the honest answer is potentially, trauma therapy can temporarily feel harder before it gets better. As you move into deeper work and start to process difficult experiences, you might notice heightened emotions, more anxiety, extra fatigue, or times when memories resurface. It can feel a bit like a “therapy hangover.”
Don’t worry, though, this doesn’t mean anything’s going wrong. It’s a completely normal and expected part of the process. Our trauma counsellors in Barrie take great care to work at a pace that feels manageable, while helping you build the skills to handle those symptoms and feel less weighed down by your trauma over time.
How is trauma therapy different from traditional "talk therapy"?
Traditional talk therapy often focuses on “top-down” approaches, meaning it works through your thoughts, insight, and understanding by talking things through. Trauma therapy includes some of that, but it also brings in “bottom-up” approaches, which focus on how trauma shows up in your body and nervous system, and can involve gently working with uncomfortable body sensations or emotional reactions.
Our goal is to help you process the impact of your experiences, and not just talk about what happened, so they feel less intense and have less of a hold on your daily life.
What if I feel overwhelmed after a session?
We never want to move at a pace that leaves you overwhelmed or distressed during or after a session, which is why we focus so much on stabilizing your symptoms and building coping skills first. That said, there may be times you feel more emotional, dysregulated, or tired after a session, particularly as you start to process things more deeply.
If that happens, we’ll adjust. We’ll slow things down, come back to stabilization, and make sure you feel supported between sessions. The goal is always to keep the work within a range that feels manageable for you, inside what we call your window of tolerance.
What's the difference between "Big T" and "little t" trauma?
“Big T” trauma usually refers to more obvious traumatic experiences, like sexual or domestic or childhood abuse, assault, accidents, or other events that involve a strong sense of danger, fear, or threat.
“Little t” trauma refers to more ongoing or less visible experiences, like repeated criticism (particularly as a child), emotional neglect, bullying, difficult relationships, chronic stress, or repeated situations where you felt unsupported, unsafe, or not good enough.
It’s worth saying that “Big T” trauma isn’t necessarily more impactful than “little t” trauma. Both are valid, and both can affect your nervous system, relationships, self-esteem, and sense of safety. In counselling for trauma in Barrie, we don’t compare experiences or decide whether something was “bad enough” to count. We focus on understanding how it’s affected you and helping you work through it in a way that feels supportive and manageable.
Can I heal from trauma that happened a long time ago?
Yes, absolutely. There’s no expiry date on healing, and it’s never too late to work through something, even if it happened years or decades ago. In fact, a lot of people don’t come to trauma counselling in Barrie until long after the event, sometimes because life finally slowed down enough for it to surface, or because it’s quietly been affecting them all along without them connecting the dots. Old trauma can still shape how you feel, react, and relate to people today, and that means it can still be worked through and eased, no matter how much time has passed.
How do I know if what I went through "counts" as trauma?
Here’s the thing: trauma isn’t about measuring up to some threshold or comparing your story to someone else’s. If something has left you feeling unsafe, on edge, stuck, or not quite like yourself, that’s worth paying attention to, full stop. You don’t need to justify it, explain it, or prove it was serious enough. We’ll never ask you to rank your pain. We’ll just help you understand how it’s affected you and work through it at your pace. Book a free consultation to learn more about how we work.
How long does trauma therapy take?
The timeline for healing varies from person to person, depending on the nature of your trauma, the intensity of your symptoms, and the level of support you need. Some people start to notice meaningful improvements within a few months, like feeling calmer and more grounded, handling triggers better, or having more stability day to day.
For others, particularly when trauma has been ongoing or started early in life, healing can take longer, several months to a year, or more. It takes time to reprocess trauma, rebuild your sense of self, and develop more trust in yourself and others. Healing isn’t always linear, and there may be times you feel more reactive again, but that’s part of the process. At Inner Growth Counselling & Psychotherapy, we’re here to support you in lasting healing, so your trauma no longer defines you or holds you back from the life you want.
How much does trauma therapy in Barrie cost?
Our session fees depend on which therapist for trauma in Barrie you see and the length of your session. Counselling sessions are $170 for a 50-minute session with a full RP, or $160 with an RP (Qualifying). If you’d like a bit more time, which can be helpful for trauma work, 75-minute sessions are $250 with a full RP or $225 with an RP (Qualifying).
If money’s a bit tight, our Affordable Therapy Program pairs you with one of our Master’s Clinical Interns at $100 per session.
